About Hayden

Head Coach · Adults program
1st-degree black belt

Hayden began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 17 and has since built one of the more battle-tested resumes on the mats, competing in over 300 matches across both gi and no-gi divisions. That relentless competition mileage shows in a coaching style built on pressure-testing technique under live conditions, not just drilling.

Hayden's black belt was awarded by Keller Locke-Sohdi of Grappling Education, along with a 1st Dan black belt ranking — recognition of years of consistent development on the mats. Beyond BJJ, Hayden has also stepped into the cage, competing in MMA while representing Australia on the international stage.

Whether you're a first-day white belt or a seasoned competitor, Hayden brings a wealth of high-level competitive experience to every class at Inner Westside BJJ.

John-Henry Mallam

Founder · Head Coach, Kids Program
Brown belt

John-Henry began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2017 at the world-renowned Gracie Humaita, laying a deep technical foundation rooted in one of the most respected lineages in the sport. In 2021, he founded Inner Westside BJJ, building a gym focused on real growth — for beginners and competitors alike.

Over the years, John-Henry has trained and coached extensively under many of Australia's top wrestling and BJJ coaches, refining a well-rounded approach that blends takedowns with high-level grappling technique.

What drives John-Henry most is development — taking someone with zero experience and building them up from the ground floor, and shaping the next generation of grapplers through IWSBJJ's kids program. He's committed to creating a gym culture where every member, young or experienced, has room to grow.

Denny Handlin

Coach
Brown belt

Denny's martial arts journey began with a lifelong passion for combat sports, leading him to step onto the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mats in 2014. Over the years, he has forged a strong technical foundation, training under Sharp Jiu Jitsu Academy Head Professor Bruno Alves (2016 World Masters Champion & 2017 Abu Dhabi Pro World Champion) and earning his Purple Belt under Professor Richard Avery at SJJA Gladesville. In 2025, Denny joined the Inner Westside Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team and in June 2026 — surrounded by his family and the IWSBJJ team — earned his Brown Belt.

Denny is deeply passionate about empowering the next generation through Jiu Jitsu. He believes true technical excellence is built on a foundation of consistent practice, disciplined technique, and an encouraging, supportive team environment. Whether guiding kids through their very first class or helping adult students navigate their personal goals, Denny is dedicated to helping every practitioner reach their full potential on and off the mats.
